Wisp Slippers
With the arrival of the solstice, winter is officially here - and Christmas and the new year are right around the corner. I'm sure many of you are furiously working away on gift knits, and I have a fast and giftable project to share with you today! If you're finding yourself in need of a last minute gift, or you'd like to take a break from the gifts and make a quick little something for you, Wisp Slippers are just the ticket!
Wisp Slippers are a cozy project for winter knitting and work up quickly in bulky weight yarn. The efficient one-piece construction means just two ends to weave in per slipper, and no seaming! You’ll start by knitting a tab at the back of the heel, pick up stitches and knit flat along the ankle opening, and then join in the round for the rest. Hold your bulky weight yarn with a strand of laceweight mohair for extra coziness! These are so fast to get on the needles - you’ll cast on just 5 stitches, and the illustrated tutorial included in the pattern will help walk you through the beginning of your project!
I dove into my stash for this project, pulling out leftovers from previous knits. I chose Brooklyn Tweed Quarry (leftover from my Cloud's Rest Cardigan and Hat projects a few years ago) since it is so cozy and fast to work up - it's a great choice for slippers! I held a strand of Moondrake Co. Mohair Lace along with the Quarry - you might remember that I also used this yarn in last month's Wisp Mittens. Even after two projects, I have a good bit of mohair left in the skein - probably enough to hold along as I knit up a hat!
I think stash diving is such a good option for this project. Even if you don't have bulky weight in your stash, you can hold other yarns together to get the weight you need. You could try holding 2 strands of Worsted or heavier DK together, or 3-4 strands of leftover balls of fingering weight. If mixing yarns, try to pick colors that are similar in value (level of lightness or darkness) and next to each other on the color wheel. Too much contrast (in color, or light vs. dark) leads to a more marled effect which can hide the stitch pattern.
