Balsam Point Hat
It's hard to believe that we are already heading into February! If you follow along with my Instagram stories, you've been watching the progress of this hat since the tail end of December. I had started playing around with a new sock design (coming out in February or March), and decided the stitch pattern would be really stunning in a slightly thicker yarn. I knit up two baby swatches and put up a poll to see which one you liked best. You all continued to help with this design - deciding whether or not to add a pom, helping me come up with a name, and sharing your preferences on different approaches for written directions. Thank you all so much for collaborating with me in the design process! I love how this design & pattern turned out, and I think you will too.
Balsam Point Hat features a geometric motif that’s reminiscent of a colorwork pattern. You’ll create the angled stitches with 1x1 twists that don’t need a cable needle! The pattern includes a video tutorial for those angled stitches - they’re really just one more step after working a k2tog or ssk ! Knit your hat up with a folded or single layer brim - or follow the modification tip for a double layer brim that’s secured at the inside. Four sizes will fit much of the family - just pick a favorite solid or semi solid color to show off the stitch pattern!
I knit up two samples, both using leftovers from previous sweater projects. The green sample is Knit Picks Swish DK in Lost Lake Heather, a soft and affordable superwash merino. The gold sample is Brown Sheep Company Prairie Spun DK, another affordable option that has a slightly more rustic and structured feel. I chose to go with the single layer brim option on this one since the yarn is a little denser and is plenty warm on its own.
