Wisp Mittens

I'm so excited to share Wisp Mittens with you. The official start of winter is just a few weeks away - many of us are busy working away on gift knits, or working up a stash of handknit accessories to keep us warm during the winter months. I have always been a fingerless mitt knitter, as they keep your hands cozy but your fingers accessible - great for driving, or accessing your phone.

When I released the Wisp Mitts pattern last year, I immediately got a few requests for a mitten version. I tucked those requests away, and now after more than a year of working from home, I've been finding more of a desire for full mittens too. I've been driving less, and walking more around my neighborhood, even when it's chilly out - and the extra warmth of a mitten top is becoming a lot more appealing than the easy-access of fingerless mitts.

I used Apple Fiber Studio Jonagold, a 100% merino DK weight in a beautiful semi solid green, held with Moondrake Co. Mohair Lace, a mohair/silk blend in a gold color. I was so pleasantly surprised with how these two colors worked up together despite being different in value - I ended up with a gilded green with that beautiful gold halo. If you want to play with different color combinations, just cast on a few stitches and work up a couple of rows in garter stitch. That will give you just enough canvas to figure out whether you like your combo. Of course you can also stick with two similar shades of the same color - those always turn out beautiful!

If you don't have mohair in your stash, you can also work up Wisp Mittens in a single strand of worsted weight. Several of my preview knitters chose this route and their projects are lovely too! Just remember that Mohair/silk blends have little stretch, which can make your gauge a little looser than typical. If subbing in a for a single strand of worsted weight, consider going up a needle size.
