Synthesis Tank

August is winding down but it is still hot as ever around here! I have a little summer top that's just waiting to hop on your needles so you can have a fun wardrobe addition before the weather cools back down in the fall — Synthesis Tank! This top has a unique construction with only one seam at the center back to create a wearable garment. Leave the bottom of the seam open for a split back detail - this creates a unique look and also adds an easier fit around the hips. The garter stitch background has two benefits: minimal purling, and an easy ability to fade different colors together throughout the top.

One of my favorite things about this pattern is that it includes 3 different body silhouettes (fitted, a-line, or relaxed) so you can create your perfect summer look. The relaxed crop (green) and fitted tank (pink) are shown in the photos above. There are 10 sizes ranging from 26” - 62” at the full bust for each of these patterns. I knit up the size 34", and I'm wearing it with 4" of negative ease at my full bust, and about 1" of negative ease at my upper bust. Choosing a size that's closest to your upper bust (or slightly smaller) ensures that the garment doesn't wing away from your body.

These tops are worked up in fingering weight, and depending on your size you'll use just over 1 skein or up to 4 assuming you are working with the typical ~425yd skein. Since this has a garter stitch body, it is the perfect opportunity to stash dive and create a fade from skeins you already own. I used 1 full and 1 partial skein of Valley Yarns Charlemont for the green sample, leftover from my Knot Front Crop project 2 years ago. For the the pink sample I faded two yarns together from my stash, using Knit Picks Hawthorne for the bottom and Lofty Loops Sock for the top. Once I started running low on the first skein, I just alternated every 2 rows! I even think this would be a beautiful way to use up sock yarn scraps and create a one of a kind stripey top.
