Balsam Point Socks
It's still hard to believe that we've officially turned the calendar over to March. There have been a few warmer days here and there, but I'm still pretty much living in handknits. Along with sweaters and cozy accessories for going outdoors, handknit socks are an essential part of my wardrobe. You can find me wearing them most days until the highs are consistently above about 65°F! I like adding a few pairs of socks to refresh my sock drawer each year, and Balsam Point Socks were my first addition for this year.
Balsam Point Socks feature a geometric motif that’s reminiscent of a colorwork pattern. The 1x1 twists that form the angled lines are worked without a cable needle, and it's so fun to watch the pattern develop. I've been playing with this stitch pattern since the beginning of the year - you may have seen my Balsam Point Hat and Balsam Point Cowl patterns - it is such a fun texture to knit up! I actually started playing with this motif with the socks first, but I got distracted trying out the stitch pattern in the heavier yarn weight for the hat and cowl before I knit up the second sock. As always, the pattern includes both charted and fully written out instructions. There's also a video tutorial for the right and left twist stitches to help set you up for success in this project!
As with many of my projects lately, I dove into stash for the yarn in an effort to use the beautiful things I already have. Fun fact: this is my 6th pattern release in a row using stash yarn - and this one's a double dip as this was left over from making Oakhaven Tee last fall! The yarn is Ewetopia Yarns Wisco Sock in Pheasant, purchased several years ago at A Wool Gathering yarn festival here in Ohio. I've been really pleased with how the sweater has been wearing, and I'm excited to have some socks with this yarn too!
