Balsam Point Cowl
Winter is still hanging on here - after a brief bit of springy weather, we are back below freezing. We still have more than a month to go until Spring is officially here, and that means quite a bit more time for wearing those cozy winter accessories! I pile a bunch on every time I go for a walk around the neighborhood, which is most days after work (gotta get some movement in after sitting at my desk all day for my day job!) Lately, I've added cowls back into the mix - I had forgotten how delightfully cozy they are. You can pull them up around your face so your eyes are peeping out, and the cowl keeps a nice little pocket of warmer air in front of your nose and mouth - so essential for chilly days! After rediscovering my love of cowls, I quickly knit up one up, and I'm sharing the pattern with you today!
Balsam Point Cowl features a geometric motif that’s reminiscent of a colorwork pattern. The 1x1 twists that form the angled lines are worked without a cable needle, and it's so fun to watch the pattern develop. The pattern includes a video tutorial for those angled stitches - they’re really just one more step after working a k2tog or ssk! You can choose from a neckwarmer or long loop option, and I've also included guidance on modifying for a custom circumference. As always, the pattern includes both charted and fully written out instructions.
This project was yet another stash dive, and I pulled out Jill Draper Makes Stuff Kingston. I picked up 2 skeins of this DK weight yarn back in 2020 to make a hat and mitt set, but I ended up only using one and the other has been sitting in my stash ever since. I felt that this rustic woolen spun yarn would be the perfect choice for a cowl - it knits up into a lightweight, structured, and cohesive fabric that does a beautiful job of trapping air (and therefore warmth!) The color I chose is called Broadway, a beautiful heathery green-gold with tweedy flecks all over. I think I lucked out with the color - it is just solid enough to do a great job of showing off the stitch pattern.
