Balsam Point Cardigan

It's been a little while since I last chatted with you! There's been lots of stuff going on behind the scenes, and I'm very excited to share my first garment pattern of the year with you today! Balsam Point Cardigan is a fun layering piece with a unique construction that will keep you engaged as you knit.

This adds onto the Balsam Point series in a fun and fast to knit garment (don't miss the Hat, Cowl, Sock, and Mitt patterns that are already out!) I used an aran weight yarn and fun construction to spice this design up a bit! Start by knitting the back from the bottom up, and pick up along the side seams for the sideways knit fronts. Add a quick ribbed trim for an easy layering piece or opt for the full length sleeves for a truly cozy knit. Like the other designs, the angled stitches are created with 1x1 cable twists that don't require a cable needle!

With the unique construction, I wanted to include a variety of resources to help you successfully work up your project. The pattern file includes everything below!

  • Detailed Schematic: Includes measurement tables in both inches and cm along with a few notes to help you select the right size for your project

  • Modification Guidance: Tips on how to adjust the body and armhole lengths if you're interested in making a change. Options for short & long sleeves are already written into the pattern!

  • Construction Diagrams: A step-by-step visual guide to walk you through the unique sideways construction after completing the back!

  • Charts & Written Directions: You can choose your preferred method to work with

  • Partial Repeat Worksheet: A portion of the pattern has you work “in pattern” over a partial repeat at each of the fronts. This worksheet walks you through creating full row-by-row instructions so you're never second guessing (and it's as easy as crossing a few things out!)

  • Video Tutorial: Link included to walk you through how to create the 1x1 twists without a cable needle, so you can be 100% confident in your stitches

I used Briar Rose Fibers Sonoma for this cardigan - I snuck by with just a single skein! Sonoma is listed as an Aran weight yarn on Ravelry, so if you are subbing yarns I recommend choosing another aran or heavy worsted weight yarn. Look for something has between about 175-200 yards per 100g skein, or you may also be able to get gauge holding sport weight or heavy fingering weight double. Be sure to swatch – as long as you are able to achieve the stated gauge at 16 sts/4" with a cohesive fabric (make sure your stitches aren't loosey-goosey!) your chosen yarn should work out nicely. When choosing your own yarn, solids and semi-solids are going to show off the twisted stitches in this pattern best.
