Bryce Socks

Can you believe we are less than two weeks away from the official start of spring? The winter here has been so mild, and I have been taking every advantage of this unseasonably warm weather and getting outside whenever I can. I definitely was expecting to be cooped up indoors while on maternity leave from my full time job this winter! I know it will be an adjustment to fit in designing time, not to mention knitting time once I head back to work (I start back on Monday - wish me luck!)

While on leave, I've been slowly working away on new designs and I finally have my first pattern ready for you. Bryce Socks feature slipped stitch cables that create a geometric pattern along the leg, and the seed stitch background adds even more richness to the texture. These socks are knit from the cuff down with a traditional heel flap and gusset in fingering weight yarn. To ensure a great fit with the cables, cast on a size that has a few more stitches than your typical stockinette sock!

While prime “sock drawer season” might be winding down, handknit socks are still so nice to cozy up with inside, especially once the air conditioning starts running! Socks are a great portable project, where it's so easy to pick up and put down. If you're working on DPNs, you just have to work across a few stitches before you're at a good stopping point at the end of a needle. The stitch pattern on Bryce Socks becomes very intuitive once you've worked a repeat or two making it even easier to pick up and put down.

I used Destination Yarn Postcard in the Kale colorway, and while I know it's named after the plant, the color feels like a perfect pair of lived-in jeans. Jeanne is based here in Ohio (she's up in Cleveland!) and I first found her yarn at one of the local shows a few years after I moved here. She is definitely one of my favorite dyers, and I can't say enough good things about the Postcard base. This is a light fingering 75% merino/25% nylon blend and it is one of the hardest-wearing yarns in my sock drawer. I have a pair I knit up in early 2017 that looks as good as new despite the fact that I machine wash and dry my socks (I know, I know, but there's only so much time in the day!)

All five sizes of the socks use a skein or less of Postcard thanks to its generous yardage. Some of the larger sizes cross the 400 yard mark for yardage requirements, so double check your skein and size to make sure you'll have enough. I chose a semi-solid color to really let the stitch pattern pop, but you could even try out a lightly variegated yarn because the slipped stitch cables and seed stitch will help to break up the colors in an interesting way.
